THE NEARBY HARVARD UNIVERSITY AND MIT
18th August,
Sharon, Boston,
My Dear Kush,
Sharon, Boston,
My Dear Kush,
How you feel by realizing that you are residing near Harvard University which has ranked again first in the list of 500 world universities. If you are visiting Boston and told that you are near to Harvard University and MIT which are located to nearby place-called Cambridge ,what will be your reaction ? . Knowing this fact, no one- either a tourist like me or one coming to reside in Boston or nearby town , can resist temptation to visit the place and have a look to Harvard University Therefore, on this Sunday, we planned to visit Cambridge where the two world famous institutes are located .
When we crossed Boston, we were going through the banks of Charles river and witnessed boys and girls running nearby foot path ; some doing exercise while others , I think were practicing for their athletic games. After crossing the bridge over the river , we entered Cambridge town and from Cambridge crossing , Harvard university campus started. It is not one building but many buildings scattered ; there are different colleges under the university . Both boys and girls were visible on the roads , in the restaurants ; on the road side, at one place, we could see a temporary stall ,depicting some books.
After passing Harvard university and adjoining to it, we observed Massachusetts Institute of Technology - this has also ranked 4th in the world list of universities. This ,MIT ,in contrast to Harvard, is a compact huge building .This world famous engineering institute was showing various departments.
As you are aware, America was first inhabited by the Britons and Boston is the place from where they entered to this new geography (I have attached Columbus statute from where he is supposed to get down to America ). As is normal , its difficult to erase previous memories so quickly hence these first migrants start naming the towns similar to that of United Kingdom .That's why there are the names - Cambridge , Manchester, Charles river ,New England -a repetition of old memories .Not only this, the architect of these two prestigious institutes is also manifestation of European architect . Whereas, Harvard is constructed with Bricks , MIT is totally constructed using stones. Student facilities were existing everywhere like road side meters for parking cars, bus stops and moving buses ,restaurants claiming cuisines of different countries.
We took a round of MIT and when we reached to its right side, we could see the flowing Charles river and on other side of the river was our Boston city as the attached photographs testify.
By taking such type of round, no one can confirm ranks of any institute. It is not the building or campus, but criterion set aside for determining ranks and how a institute fare in that criterion will determine its status . One of our colleague ,who did MRCVS from Britain was telling that ordinary rooms of Cambridge university will never testify to an outsider that the place had witnessed the academic works of noble laureates. The important criterion in present case is the number of noble prizes won by its faculty or alumni , research papers published in Nature and Science, citation index etc . And this is the reason why these two institutes consistently maintaining their place among world universities . If you ask me the status of Indian universities in this regard, I will say you are fortunate that you are residing in Bangalore whose institute- Indian institute of Sciences- have found its place (the only institute from India ) among 500 top ranked Universities.
Obviously, every meritorious student should aspire to get admission in Harvard or MIT where he can learn under a distinguished faculty .But here annual expenditures are exorbitant . As per a recently published news , studies in USA is costliest with $ 40,000/ ( about 24,00,000 Rs ) expenditure per year, increasing as per institute while Germany is cheapest with annual cost of about $ 6,200/ . Naturally , its difficult for we Indians to study in USA without receiving any scholarship/ fellowship which is not unusual for meritorious students . I hope you best and wish that your hard studies will eligible you to get admission in prestigious educational institutes in USA ; please also remember , it is not the institutes but your passion which lead you in your life.

A Tourist visit to Boston,USA
6th August,2013
My Dear Kush ,
My Dear Kush ,
This Saturday , we planned to visit tourist places of Boston just like any other tourist . Indian tourists come to this place through international tourist agents, while local Americans ,who are residing in near by places, also come to visit Boston and enjoy touring as we Indians enjoy touring Indian tourist places .
After taking heavy breakfast, we started our journey at about 12 o clock and reached Boston in half an hour . There,we have to search parking place (not free but on payment basis ) for our car in down town (the name given to interiors of any city in America) , and ultimately ventured into a multistory building , as revealed in the photo. This whole family consisting of five members moved on foot to nearby place where different counters are installed to sell tickets for Boston visit and I was imaging the tour like that of Delhi or Bangalore .
In India
As you are aware that our big cities like Delhi, Bangalore ,Hyderabad etc also arrange a 'day tour' by touring bus services, generally charging 100 Rs ( less than 2 dollars) per person. The bus tour takes whole day , about 8 hours (starting from 9 AM and lasting up-to 6 PM), to visit different historical places of the city. The conductor of the bus ,after reaching to a historical place, gives you 20-30 minutes to get inside the monument and you may hire a local guide, particularly in places like Kutub Minar or "Jantar Mantar" on a very nominal charges to have full story about the place and then the bus will take you to a different destination ; in the evening it will reach to 'starting point' to say good bye to all the tourists.
At Boston
Here , the ticket per person was 30 dollars ( or Rs 1800/) and the carrier is called Trolley hence its a Trolley Tour . It is 'Hop-on" ,"Hop off" tour that means if you are interested to watch any monument from inside, you may dis- embark from the present trolley, take your own time and then may catch any other trolley of same agency
In place of this trolley tour there is also a duck tour . Here the carriers ply both on the road as well as in the water hence give a visit to sea water, directly , without taking a cruise.
After half an hour waiting ,we could load ourselves in a "City View Trolley" This is a bus but the sides are open ,without any glass so that you may have a full view of the sites. Moreover, its height was also less than our ordinary buses ,with tourist capacity of about 30 members. Surprisingly, there was only one man on the trolley who was performing all actions- driver, conductor and guide. He took us from different roads of the city and there were nine points ,where he stopped for 3-4 minutes, explained the point and moved further .The points were - new England aquarium, Paul revere house, old north church , old ironsides, TD banknorth garden or sports museum, old state house, public garden, state house or Beacon hill, and Boston tea party ship and museum south station . And you know how much time , he took for this round trip- not more than two hours .As per your mausajee version, here labor is quite costly hence they can't have the luxury of having a conductor or guide or extend the tour for four hours or so .Since Ruhan was with us and more over we also feel tired hence we did not dare to get down any spot and than to get another trolley to complete our journey.
I was saddened to note that this Trolley tour does not include the site of Museum of Science in Boston which I have already visited and in my opinion , a must see ,though will take 4-5 hours, by all the tourists. It also missed to show us the site of Museum of Fine Arts- perhaps thinking that the general tourists have no interest in such matters.

However, this trolley tour entitled us to board on a big cruise who took us to a round visit of the sea. I could see the seagulls in the sky -they are white in color with grayish wings; these we have also observed during our visit to Wangaersheek beach otherwise we fail to see any big bird in the sky . After this cruise journey, we visited a harbor and noticed the spot where Columbus landed in America- As I have told you earlier ,this is the Boston sea port which was used by the British persons to in-habitat first time this new geography . In memory of this, there is a statute of Columbus and we enjoyed photography at that place. The harbor was installed with telescopes also which help you to watch distant things - you may also enjoy these movements by watching the enclosed photos .
About other spots , I have mentioned while dealing social life in Sharon , Boston,USA
